Making the bed is boring, and so is editing.
This much I know (but don’t do)—I must …
… Resist the urge to edit right away. I like to plunge before the ink dries, when the line between writing and editing is blurred. But if I let my writing sit for a while, I know the edits will be truer. I know I’ll see the doubles, the triples. Maybe.
… Go over and over and over each passage so I don’t waste words. But sometimes repetition is good, I tell myself. See?—I hate to cut words.
… Figure out ways to see something new.
… Fall out of love with my work. For I love it, I do, I love the writing. I hate the cutting. I loathe the editing.
… Make a “cut” file, then I can stand to kill my darlings. (Lots of times the cut file is larger than the rest of the work.)
